On July 17, 2017, Samsung Industries completed the shell specification MESC SPE 85/300 product certification for our product spiral wound gasket.
This test was conducted by amtec, an authorized testing institute in Germany, in accordance with the MESC SPE 85/300 test standard of Shell, USA.

1. Explanation of Test Specifications
MESC SPSE 85/300 is a type approval test for gaskets(Type Acceptance Testing of Gasket (TAT)

To ensure that the gasket design is in accordance with the applicable design standard and MESC SPE as per Table 1(e.g. marking, condition of sealing surfaces or superficial damage.)
Procedure :
Execute prior and after each test as described in caluse 3.3.
Recordings :
All abservations shall be recorded.
Acceptance criteria :
No deviations from the applicable design standard and MESC SPE are allowed.
2) Fugitive Emissions
Purpose :
To ensure the tightness of the gasketed joint after installation, within the operating window as per the MESC buying description.
Test condition :
Rated pressure at both ambient and maximum design temperature, with helium as test fluid.
Procedure :
Test shall be carried out in accordance with Annex B of ISO 15848-1. The bagging method is also accptable.
Retightening of flange bolts or reloading of the gasket is prohibited.
Recordings :
Emission class at ambient and maximum design temperature.
Acceptance criteria :
The leakage rate and applicable emission class shall be as per Table 4.

3) Fire Test
Purpose :
Verification and qualification of the gasket fire resistance.
Procedure and recordings :
Test shall be carried out in accordance with API 6FB or FITT.
Acceptance criterea :
Fire test Executed in accordance with API 6FB, the acceptance criteria shall be in accordance with API 6FB. Fire test executed in accordance with PVRC FITT, Tpmin shall be > 32.
4) Room Temperature Operation Tightness Test(ROTT)
Purpose :
To determine the flange design parameters, the minimum required gasket stress in the assembly and operation, the E-modulus, the maximum allowable gasket stress and the creep relaxation factor(PQr).
Test condition, procedure and recordings :
Test shall be carried out in accordance with EN 13555.
Acceptance criteria :
Not applicabe(informative).
5)High Temperature Operational Tightness Test(HOTT)
Purpose :
To determine the gasket tightness at maximum design temperature.
Test condition :
Rated pressure at maximum design temperature, with helium as test fluid.
Procedure :
1. Increase test temperature to maximum design temperature at a rate of 100℃(212℉) per hour.
2. Increase test pressure up to the rated pressure at maximum disign temperature and stabilise this condition for 1 hour(isolate test fluid from test rig).
3. Decrease test temperature until ambient temperature.
4. Increase test temperature to maximum design temperature at a rate 100℃(212℉) per hour and stabilise the reached test situation for 1 hour.
5. Repeat step 3.
6. Repeat step 4 and step 5 for 2 times and record the pressure drop during the final cycle.
Recordings :
Pressure, temperature and pressure drop.
Acceptance criteria :
The maximum pressure loss during the final cycle is 1 bar(14.5 psi).
6) Hou Blowout Test
Purpose :
To determine the resistance against blowout, due to pressure, or temperature.
Test condition :
HOBT-1
Increasing pressure at maximum design temperature with a maximum gasket stress of 34.5
Mpa(5004 psi) with helium or nitrogen as test fluid.
HOBT-2
Increasing temperature at maximum design pressure with a maximum gasket stress of 34.5 Mpa(5004 psi) with helium or nitrogen as test fluid.
Procedure :
Test shall be carried out in accordance with the HOBT-1 for all gaskets except PTFE-based sheet gaskets. PTFE-based sheet gaskets shall be tested in accordance with the HOBT-2.

Maximum pressure where gasket blowout occurs.
HOBT-2
Maximum temperature where gasket blowout occurs.
Acceptance criteria :
HOBT-1
Pressure where gasket blowout occurs shall be >1.5 x maximum pressure at maximum design temperature.
HOBT-2
Temperature where gasket blowout occurs shall be >290℃(550℉)
7)Aged Tensile Relaxation Screening(ATRS)
Purpose :
To determine the resistance against oxidation.
Test condition :
Aging at 288℃(550.4℉) for 96 hours.
Procedure :
Test shall be carride out in accordance with TTRL.
Recordings:
Mechanical load retention (Qpr), tensile quality measure (Qpx) and conbined parameter (Qp).
Acceptance criteria :
Qp should be >1.0 (informative).
8) Medium Resistance Test
Purpose :
To verify the gasket compatibility with various chemicals.
Procedure :
Chemical resistance of non-metallic materials, including elastomers, shall be determined in accordance with ASTM C 581.
Recordings :
Recordings shall be in accordance with ASTM C 581.
Acceptance criteria :
Not applicable (informative).
9)Glue Identification
This is not a test as such, but covers only a verification of the glue (or adhesive) type.
The brand name and manufacturer's certificate shall be supplied to the Principal.
The performance of the glue under any operating condition will be verified during the operational test as specified in clause 3.3.
10) Cold Compression
Purpose :
To determine the relationship between cold gasket compression and gasket stress.
Test condition :
Ambient temperature.
Procedure and recordings :
Test shall be carried out in accordance with EN 13555.
Acceptance criteria :
Not applicable (infomative).
11) Cold Compression / Hot Recovery Test
Purpose :
To determine the recovery of gaskets after a short-term compression.
Test condition, procedure and recordings :
Test shall be carried out in accordance with ASTM F 36, Procedure A.
Acceptance criteria :
Acceptance criteria shall be in accordance with MESC SPE 85/101.
12) Leak Test
Purpose :
To verify the tightness against gas and liquids.
Test condition, procedure and recordings :
The liquid leak test shall be carried out in accordance with ASTM F 37, Method A, with Fuel A as test fluid. The gas leak test shall be carried out in accordance with ASTM F 37, Method B, with nitrogen as test fluid.
Acceptance criteria :
Acceptance criteria shall be in accordance with MESC SPE 85/101.
13) Gasket adhesion
Purpose :
To ensure that gasket does not stick to the adhesion flanges.
Test condition, procedure and recordings :
Test shall be carried out in accordance with ASTM F 607 at ambient temperature. In case an anti-stick coating is applied, the test report shall record the vrand and type of that coating.
Accptance criteria :
There shall be no visible adhesion of any gasket material to any of the adhesion flanges.
14) BAM
Purpose :
To ensure compatibility with oxygen at maximum desifn temperature.
Test condition, procedure, recordings and acceptance criteria :
Test shall be carried out accordance with BGI Merkbltt M034-1.
This test was conducted by amtec, an authorized testing institute in Germany, in accordance with the MESC SPE 85/300 test standard of Shell, USA.

1. Increase test temperature to maximum design temperature at a rate of 100℃(212℉) per hour.
2. Increase test pressure up to the rated pressure at maximum disign temperature and stabilise this condition for 1 hour(isolate test fluid from test rig).
3. Decrease test temperature until ambient temperature.
4. Increase test temperature to maximum design temperature at a rate 100℃(212℉) per hour and stabilise the reached test situation for 1 hour.
5. Repeat step 3.
6. Repeat step 4 and step 5 for 2 times and record the pressure drop during the final cycle.
Recordings :
Pressure, temperature and pressure drop.
Acceptance criteria :
The maximum pressure loss during the final cycle is 1 bar(14.5 psi).
6) Hou Blowout Test
Purpose :
To determine the resistance against blowout, due to pressure, or temperature.
Test condition :

Increasing pressure at maximum design temperature with a maximum gasket stress of 34.5
Mpa(5004 psi) with helium or nitrogen as test fluid.
HOBT-2

Procedure :
Test shall be carried out in accordance with the HOBT-1 for all gaskets except PTFE-based sheet gaskets. PTFE-based sheet gaskets shall be tested in accordance with the HOBT-2.

7)Aged Tensile Relaxation Screening(ATRS)
Purpose :

Aging at 288℃(550.4℉) for 96 hours.

Recordings:
